Appointment Process
Each referral is handled by a Patient Access Specialist that will answers questions and guide the referring physician and patient through the referral process.
You may be asked to send medical reports and/or pathology slides to M. D. Anderson prior to the new patient appointment being scheduled. This is done to ensure the patient is scheduled with the appropriate medical service. We may also use this information to pre-schedule any testing that might be needed when the patient arrives.
Before we confirm an appointment, a Patient Access Specialists will collect insurance information, verify benefits and seek financial authorization.
If the patient meets Texas residency requirements but is uninsured or unable to pay for services, a Supplemental Financial Assistance application may be provided.
We evaluate most new patients on an outpatient basis. A full outpatient evaluation usually takes three to five business days, depending on the amount of testing and consultation needed to assess the patient's condition and recommend a treatment plan. After the evaluation is complete, the referring physician receives a written report of the findings and recommendations. Referring physicians signed up with myMDAnderson for Physicians have online access to medical reports once they are signed off by M. D. Anderson staff.
